The New Haven Ravens, a Double A affiliate of Toronto, played at Yale Field. Yale Field opened in 1927 and is the baseball field for Yale University. It is a nice older stadium, but does not meet today's Double A standards. Most of the seating is covered. It is rumored that the Ravens are looking forward to a newer stadium. This is the 10th year for the Ravens. The concession stands are located in a dark hall under the stadium. The Ravens were playing the Reading Phillies and were doing fine until the top of the 9th inning when the Phillies scored 5 runs with two outs. The Ravens went through 3 pitchers before getting the final out. The final score was Phillies 8 and Ravens 7. The box score was Phillies R-8, H-11, E-2 and Ravens R-7, H-11, E-0. The only field line shown is LF-340'. The scoreboard is hand operated and if you look closely in the picture you can see the person sitting inside. The concession stands are named Full Count and Round Tripper. Rally the Raven is the mascot. A bobble head of Rally was given out and we arrived in time to get one. There are two picnic/group areas, one down the first base line and one in right field. Attendance was 5,009 for the Saturday game. There were the usual mid-inning activities. Gil Meche and Joel Piniero, two Mariner pitchers, played at New Haven when it was a Mariners Double A affiliate in 1999 & 2000. Great place to eat is Broadway Pizza at the corner of E.T. Grasso Blvd. (RT10) and RT34 where you turn left to the ballpark. In 2004 this team moved to Manchester, NH and became the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. There is an independent league team playing here in 2006. |
